when Olivia Coleman is getting arrested herself and partner scoff poison sweets to turn stupid colours... why?
I took this as yet another LOOK!! nod, to Violet turning violet from eating the imperfect chewing gum in the original
In a way, it would have been weirder if there were absolutely no callbacks to the 1970s one, or heaven forbid if they made it a prequel to the Burton abomination. I took the exaggerated characters as decent Roald Dahl style weirdos, and I actually kind of liked it. His books are full of pretty hideous hateable adults

I reckon that as soon as I can't play it for a week or so, I will end up not playing it for several years. Whenever I do get back to it I won't remember the controls or the missions or anything that's going on. I think because I'm enjoying it, I want to try to make sure I get as much enjoyment as possible before all that happens
-
I've only had it two weeks or something like that but I'm already 55 hours in. Absolutely loving it in a way that I haven't enjoyed a game in ages. It really is very immersive, and I really like the way that new elements are slowly introduced into the game. New animals, new areas, new guns, new moves. I'm currently exploring the bayou with the swamps, alligators, mossy trees and mist.
I really appreciate that set pieces feel organic. If you spot a lamp in a house as you're riding by, you can go to investigate. I did this today, and there were four drunk prospector guys in there laughing and talking. I hid outside the house and listened to honestly five or ten minutes of banter and silliness. The fact they recorded all that, and more, for something I could have interrupted after ten seconds is great.
The game is full of details. Eagles catching fish. Deer smelling you if you approach with the wind behind you. Calming a horse if it's spooked. Horses pooping. Clothes and skin being wet after rain. Shopkeepers remembering you and giving discounts. Hundreds of thousands of little touches. Really glad I got it!

I'm not sure if I like or don't like this but I'm leaning towards like, for the kind of unsettling quality

It's probably incredibly foolhardy but at some point in NZ, nobody cared whatsoever that covid is a thing. No masks (perhaps one in a hundred wear them), no meds, no being careful, no distancing.
People post on /r/Wellington all the time saying things like they've gotten covid again, or that their office has a wave of covid going through it. Even I'm completely desensitised(?) to it all.
This, from a country with one of the quickest, harshest reactions to covid at the start
-
Probably no need to say this, but I'm absolutely loving it so far. I'm perhaps 15% complete, playing for multiple hours a day
Agreed with Pat, loving the immersion.

As is the tradition, "I'm sad and I decided to check the boards on Christmas Day"
Love y'all, have a wonderful Christmas

Walkabout golf would be perfect, I love it. Has a really good presence where you feel like you're in the room with people too
Nothing official but happy to make up a new channel/discord etc
Here it is, about fifteen years overdue

Yep I'd be super keen. I've already planned to play it with friends here (from our respective houses)
Do you mean walkabout golf? Or is there one called virtual golf? If you mean walkabout, I have all the DLC and goodies so anyone can play those too without buying it themselves
There's a nice Christmas level
I'm on WhatsApp, +64 22 044 3646 if it's easier to arrange those things. I'm also on discord, signal, telegram etc
Feel free to add me, any of you

I bought red dead redemption 2 for the Christmas and New year's holidays. Looking forward to it!

I totally agree with the barrier that comes from trying to deal with "what doesn't work today". I fell out of playing GTA5 because of this kinda thing.
I'd get the motivation to play, somehow in the same area of the Venn diagram of having the time to play. Then, I'd realise the controller is not charged because someone used the plug to charge their device and never replugged it in, or the game is demanding a weekly 110GB patch, or some other nonsense happens and I just go, ugh ok not today then.
The main use of my steam account at present is playing silly little hidden object games with the family on the projector. The voice acting is hilariously awful, the puzzles range from silly to fun, and we get a chuckle.
-
I'm a bit envious. I've not gotten that handheld gaming experience that I've wanted yet but equally I'm not sure if anything I play would be improved on it. I work from home, no commute, so I am basically always at my big gaming rig.

We all watched it today, in the imax that James Cameron had built in Wellington so people could 'enjoy' the next 50 Avatar movies as he envisioned them
It was honestly pretty good. I think if I was a kid, I'd love it. Very good cast. Silliness. Some songs were really great like "scrub scrub", "sweet tooth", some were as bad as "cheer up Charlie". The big one supposed to be this one's "pure imagination" missed the mark. They were mostly written by that Neil fella from the Divine Comedy. Never really liked their music at the time anyway.
The comedy was pretty good, heaps of British stars. Hugh Grant steals the show.
Probably wouldn't watch it again, but didn't come out of it going "ugh"

That was last years and I already got one earnest request that it's not a Chevy Chase movie this year
Earnest.. earnest
-
I'd be delighted if so, but I'm thinking it'll be halfway between original Wonka and Depp wonka

The big Christmas special of this is happening Dec 20. I'm still undecided on a movie, but will pick one soon. Should be a fun one 🙂

Trailer for GTA6 is out. It got leaked so they just revealed it early
Looks like a packed, vibrant city.

I still have never gotten around to messing with a raspberry pi, but would really love to.

Even the big media outlets still say things like "...stated on X.com (formally known as twitter)"
It's absolutely bizarre how many awful changes he's made in a short amount of time, and this is coming from someone who never liked or used Twitter, but couldn't really escape seeing screenshots of tweets etc

New Zealand has coalition governments, meaning parties can group together to add their votes and get in power, but then you get the bonkers situation where you have three leaders, more or less. One main leader but totally at the whim of the other ones, who will only form that coalition under certain ongoing demands. In this case, the bald dude in the middle, the Prime Minister, seems to be a little right of centre, a businessman at heart. I didn't vote for him but maybe it's needed for economic recovery. I can see why people didn't like the way the outgoing government were taking things, especially after Jacinda Ardern left. The other two guys either side of him are significantly more right leaning, anti-gay, anti-trans, anti-immigration etc
To the best of my knowledge the smoking ban repeal was a request of the guy on the right, who according to the article, only got 6% of the votes.
For the record they're being called Lister, Kryton and Rimmer. Some less flattering artwork is being stuck up around the city

The intro for this months 20th special savoury cinema is here. I'm linking it because it has a quick retrospective on all the movies we've shown so far. It went really well!
Skip forward to about 1m15 for the retrospective. There's some fun trailers at the end
