  1. At least I'm happily saying both sides are awful!

I thoroughly enjoy the communities I am part of. I use the 3rd party apps more than 99% of reddit users but I absolutely see why reddit (the business) are wanting to monetise the historically free API which costs them 10 mill a year to run. People get used to getting things for free, think it should be that way forever, and hate change.

"Just that lad is the most vocal." because he by far has the most free money to lose. Annual premium subscriptions and donations and all the gravy he got for making an app, and using reddits data for free. I understand the symbiosis and that reddit grew due to these apps. Best case scenario for me is reddit still charge the appmakers for access to the API, but they revisit the pricing.

As said a few times, both sides are being awful here. Reddit don't seem willing to budge an inch, but equally they can't buckle or then every single time someone gets their nose out of joint they'll try to stage a blackout.

  2. There's so much drama going on between the apple Apollo app guy and reddit, it's nonsense. Everyone looks like a whiny loser.

The ordinary reddit user trying to look at memes and movie news is already revolting back against the blackouts and protests, saying they're sick of it all. The more times the maker of that Apollo app posts, the less I like him. He's had 10+ years of making heaps of money made off the back of reddit, then reddit say they need to start charging for API, so he's screaming and shouting and begging for donations and tips, He's getting angry that he has to refund pro subscribers to his app (he estimates $250,000). It's gross behaviour from everyone but it's mostly just him spitting out his dummy and whipping up everyone into a massive "poor little me vs a big evil corp" narrative. I'm willing to bet he has made millions from reddit.

  3. Having the tent and sleeping bags set up and ready to go sounds like a pro move! I'm very keen to go to live music here more often but there's just nobody of interest and very small venues. Sometimes I go and surprise myself because it's so much fun though

  4. I can speak on this as I was personally involved. I asked the Wellington community (74000 members) if we should also shut down for from the 12th to 14th June to support this. The answer was yes, so we did.

It wasn't hundreds, it was about 8000 subreddits, including a lot of the big boys with 30 or 40 million subscribers (pics, videos, funny, aww etc). It was huge. You can see what went offline and what is still offline here.

It all came about because Reddit need to be profitable, which they are not apparently. Someone at Reddit crunched the numbers and said that it's costing Reddit 10 million a year to keep providing free API access to 3rd party apps. The decision was made (correctly in my opinion) to charge the makers of these apps to use the API, scaled based on usage. Here's where it got it ugly and turned into Us vs Them

The make of Apollo, an apple based Reddit app, said Reddit wanted to charge him 20 million a year. Reddit said your app could be much improved and use way less API calls, and we can help you with that. The owner of the app said (jokingly apparently) that if Reddit pay him $10,000,000 he'll make the app go quiet. Reddit took this as blackmail/threat or whatever and it all got very nasty.

What then happened was the maker of the app turned this entire thing into a huge "little guy vs huge corporation" thing and whipped everyone up into a frenzy. Heresay, rumour, misinformation etc abound.

So, on order to "save the third party apps", essentially all of Reddit shut down. The maker of these apps have made so much money, SO much money from Reddit. I see why they're fighting so hard.

I see both sides but lean towards Reddit on this one. They have been providing a completely free meal for a decade to the apps. Once they say hey, we'll actually need to start being paid for this, people completely lost their shit.

I'll be interested to see how it goes

/r/Wellington is a little bit separate from all the drama. We're small enough to not make a bit of difference to the bigger picture, but big enough that when we closed it was extremely noticeable for the community.

  5. I also watched Spider-man Across the Spiderverse with Quinn in an Imax here. He loves Spider-man. I was struggling to be honest, it felt really long to me and there seems no scene where it just breathes for a moment and lets up. You know no-one is going to get injured beyond a mildly bloody mouth, you know nobody is in any danger. Even if they did for some reason die, a multiverse portal can just open up ad they walk out with slightly longer hair, and go "Hey, nice to meet you".

The backgrounds are constantly animating and swirling, text boxes pop up all the time. We're forced to focus on all the uninteresting elements of the first one expanded out to a big degree.  So you liked that there were five interesting and unique spider-men in the first one? A robot anime one, a film noire one, a looney tunes one? How's about 5000 Spider-men in this one, which you'll see for twenty seconds each. It's actually a five hour movie seeing as this one ends halfway through, to be continued.

Quinn described it as a two hour chase. The only thing I see wrong with that was that it was longer than two hours.

    I wanted to like it.

  6. Quantumania is one of the only Marvel movies I turned off of after about 2/3rds through. It had nothing at all that made Ant-man interesting. I was really really struggling to get through it, for all the reasons indicated by both of you. The quantum realm just isn't interesting in any way, it's just another infinite blank canvas for marvel to grow into, like the Multiverse. There's nothing to actually ground you or make you care. It could have just as easily been an alien planet, but it was just visually horrible. Also is there some reason you go from full sized to that specific size when you shrink into the quantum realm? They were eye to eye with the inhabitants. Deeply awful.

  7. That's cool, it's nice to have those movies. I was talking to a Brazilian guy over the weekend and he says they call these kinds of things "bedside movies" or music or books. The kind of stuff you go back to again and again.

  8. We're good to go in the new bigger cinema, a 55 seater. I still need to get in and test the thing will actually play my movies, but I hope to do that tomorrow. All very exciting.

The next movie will be Groundhog Day. I wanted to start with an 8+ on imdb in the new cinema, then I can move back into weirdo cult movies.

The cinema owner asked me to make up an e-flyer, so this is the result. I used AI art to convert an actual photo of the cinema I'll be using, and told it to fill the seats with aliens, watching a movie. It kind of messed it up and had regular people watching a very lame looking alien but I really liked the results

  9. Twitter is finally turning into what you've always imagined all of Reddit to be!

I've read this week that they're trying to pass a law in the US to not allow kids under 13 on any social media. Not sure how they'd police it but I think it's a decent step. Maybe credit card needed to open an account?

  10. Understood. In reality I'd have to go through every topic and remove or hide stuff, and frankly its probably not worth it. Most likely it'll be a little private place here on the web we check in and chat about movies and shows, recommend games and books, and keep in touch. I'm grateful for that. No new signups are allowed unless I approve them

  11. I'm always tempted to open it back up to new people and new friends but then I remember twenty years of Spacemoose and hitler jokes. It costs no extra for me to keep this running as it does for having Savoury Cinema an other stuff so I'm happy to leave it up, especially as it's updated and no longer a 1997 website

  12. I watched that full clip, it was fun. Not a huge amount happened but the streamers fear was great, and all the little sound cues people could play to scare him

    Dungeons and Dragons (2023)

Relatively enjoyable action adventure romp which doesn't outstay its welcome.  I recognised a couple of the references (including one that was spoiled in advance which was hit over the head obvious when it occurred which would have been nice to see myself).

I think I know the reference - some other characters? I saw it myself with no spoilers and loved the callback. The movie was a decent 3/5 so I agree.

    Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
I went in with lowish expectations and was blown away. It’s incredibly well done all around. Most noteworthy is the fighter jet scenes which are a massive improvement over the original - they went to a lot of trouble to film everything without CGI and in a way that made it really easy to track what was going on. There are a lot of call backs to the original but this would stand on its own as a great film. The love story is a bit unnecessary but there were some great emotional stories between Maverick and other characters. I saw it in IMAX and the action sequences are amazing in that format. 4/5

Watched this recently at home on a decent set-up and it was awesome. Very entertaining.

  15. Looking forward to rereading this topic 🙂 As awful as it got, Dayz was a highlight of my gaming with heaps of good memories

The next savoury cinema on April 30th is going to be True stories, let's see how it goes down.

Several people emailed after saying they loved the movie, it was perfect for them. No one had seen it, which is rare as there were some real movie buffs there. I reckon it's definitely the kind of movie that a fraction of people absolutely love, a good amount think it's fine and some really don't find anything to like. I'm really glad the ones that loved it took the time to tell me.

The owner of the cinema said he has something to tell me next time I'm there, after I asked how it's going.

It was significantly more shocking news, and very upsetting. He let me know he only had about two months left to live according to his doctor. Heartbreaking stuff. He says his sons are not interested in running the cinema and museum so he's not sure what will happen. Probably it'll just get locked up.

He's very lovely guy, it was very sad to hear.
