  1. I felt the same way about The Wind Rises! I watched it because Ghibli was behind it, but felt like it didn't have the same magic and wonder behind it as previous releases. I was definitely a little bored and wondering where it was going.

The Tale of the Princess Kaguya is another departure from what I consider the usual Ghibli brand. I'll also watch it, because I'm a completist, but I suspect it may feel like a shore. Glad to see you gave it such high marks, Al!

The Kingdom of Dreams and Madness should be next on your list! It's a documentary about Hayao Miyazaki's life and Studio Ghibli. How could one not want to learn more about him?
  2. Loved this!

I've always hated the liberal use of cutaways in American films but never realized that Asian action movies keep the shot steady. I grew up watching Jackie Chan movies (the Chinese ones, too!) and I'll need to go re-watch them now.

Not sure if this is because I've moved from New Zealand, quite a chilled out and relaxed place, but my general feeling is that people are very ready to be angry here. Quick tempers, quick to criticize. The smallest perceived infraction driving gets a long, loud blast of the horn. That's even if the lights change and you don't move immediately.

If you're in a supermarket and are choosing something from a shelf, people loudly tut and sigh if they feel you're in the way. They frown at you, instead of saying, "Excuse me, can I just grab something".

I'm going to assume it's because I'm in a very rural community.

The horn honking is probably worse in the city because everything moves at such a quick pace all the time. People are so very, very impatient; I hear liberal use of the horn and swearing every afternoon when the typical workday is done, even though traffic is at a standstill and nobody can move.

I don't understand the passive aggressiveness in the supermarket, though. Haven't experienced it myself and I always excuse myself if I need to grab something.

More observations on my country, please!
  4. This game is currently on Kickstarter and I'm planning to back it.

Thimbleweed Park is the curious story of two washed up detectives called in to investigate a dead body found in the river just outside of town. It’s a game where you switch between five playable characters while uncovering the dark, satirical and bizarre world of Thimbleweed Park.

Lost along a dusty stretch of highway, the town of Thimbleweed Park once boasted an opulent hotel, a vibrant business district and the state’s largest pillow factory, but now teeters on the edge of oblivion and continues to exist for no real reason. It’s a town that makes you itch and your skin crawl. It’s a place no one ever looks for, but everyone seems to find.
  5. Big Hero 6 (2014)

I can't remember the last time I was so excited to see a Disney film! This movie is very loosely based on an old Marvel comic by the same name. Instead of having it based in Japan, as it is in the original, Big Hero 6 takes place in the futuristic city of San Fransokyo (San Francisco + Tokyo). The animators used property data to match San Francisco's buildings and skylines, and I definitely recognized some buildings downtown where I work. (Squee!)

This is not a perfect movie, but it was beautiful to watch (even in 3D) and Baymax is the most adorably rotund robot. There's the usual dreaded Disney tropes, but even that did not quell my giddiness for too long. This movie is fun, fun, fun.

  6. I keep getting lured in by YA dystopian novels/movies. The writing or ending always prompts me to seek out adult dyspotian fiction. So, I wasn't expecting much when I decided to watch The Maze Runner (pickings were slim!), but it was enjoyable enough. I'm curious to read the series to see how it all turns out.
  7. I tend to like Warren Ellis' stories a lot, and I have every Transmetropolitan trade paperback on my bookshelf but I still haven't touched any!

I was reading Black Science which is enjoyable (and pretty) but slowly paced. I'm just too impatient, especially if I'm reading individual issues instead of trades. People are losing their minds over the reboot of Prophet. Have you checked it out?
  8. Does anyone know if it's worth seeing Interstellar in film? There's a movie theater in San Francisco that's able to show it in 70mm film, but prices are $$$ and tickets are sold out well in advance!
