  1. But, Michael Cera always plays the same dingus.

I'm still awaiting the release of this movie! I wasn't able to locate via any other method but I am — by no means — Al, though I was able to find Submarine, Richard Ayoade's directorial debut.
  2. This comes out in the States on May 9th! Has anyone seen this? *looks at Al* It's directed by Richard Ayoade.

Eisenberg plays Simon James, a gutless, socially awkward office drone for whom even simple tasks such as ordering food or entering an elevator become a fraught challenge of hesitation and anxiety. Out of nowhere, along comes James Simon, also played by Eisenberg. He's confident, charming, instantly popular, and rapidly achieves everything his hapless counterpart craved, including the affections of Simon's colleague Hannah (Mia Wasikowska). Of course, nobody ever remarks that Simon James and James Simon look identical – principally because nobody has noticed Simon James even exists.

  3. Created/directed by Mike Judge, Silicon Valley is a sitcom about programmers. It stars Kumail Nanjiani and Martin Starr with Ratatat playing in the background! But... I'm on the fence about this. It was slightly amusing but didn't really grab my attention. It's just the pilot, though, so I'm hoping the characters grow on me.
  4. Been excited and then let down by all the space movies this year. Seems like it's all spaceporn and severely lacking anything else.

That seems like a typical cinematographic technique that Anderson uses in his live action films. There's a lot of head-on shots and shots from the side where everything in front of you is at right angles (which is actually harder to accomplish than it looks).

Ah! Saw this compilation of some of Anderson's centered shots, and there's a similar video floating around out there of Kubrick's work as well.

  6. You guy hightailed it outta town before I could make any so I brought you to my my favorite French bakery! I had three different croissants that day. Who knew gruyere and sauerkraut would be so amazing together?

I might make scones this weekend for Tamiko... which I will take photos of and you can contemplate what could have been.
  7. Yes, the goat simulator!!! We were watching this the other night to see if it was an April's Fool's joke. By the end of the trailer, we decided we were going to purchase the game even if it looks like it's only guaranteed fun for 10 minutes.
  8. Thanks for the review, Al!

I've lost my love for Wes Anderson a few movies back, so I've been waffling about seeing The Grand Budapest Hotel in theaters. I'm sure it'll look beautiful no matter what but he doesn't pull those bittersweet heartstrings (for me) like he used to.
  9. I can't eat wheat anymore (*vague grumblings about health problems*) but Mr. and Mrs. Sawall are coming into town so I think I'll make some for them! I'll force Scott to pose with your scones.

Actually I've seen the Mac and Me thing before but just did not connect to a face/name. Seriously that looks like any unshaved buffoon on a stag to me.

Paul Rudd is one of my few celebrity crushes! If you're telling me that Dublin is occupied by lookalikes, I'll be packing my bags. Or, you're like a lot of guys who can't tell when other dudes are good-looking. Attractiveness is highly subjective, yadda yadda — I know.

I watched the six there based on your write up. It's entertaining enough though the two main characters are completely unlikeable and while I gather that is the point it does take away from it a little. Most of this seems to be the voice actors who are from the "being whiny and having speech impediments is funny" school of acting. If you liked this you'll probably like Invader Zim which is a kids version of this.

Agree completely. I couldn't watch more than two episodes before I gave up on it.
  12. Agh, I have no time for games! Bought a few games on Steam during the holiday sale and have left them untouched. Partly, this is because I know I'm gonna die in Don't Starve and I just can't take it anymore.

Another tourist spot to maybe consider is that Dublina exhibit that has a bunch of historical stuff about how Dublin was 1200 years ago or so. I think you and I went and it was fun for an hour or two.

    I vaguely recall Vikings...

We had shockingly good burritos up in Washington yesterday, so you can find them elsewhere now and again. Admittedly, the salsas on the side were completely wrong.

I saw your check-in and had to inquire because everyone warns me away from Northeast Mexican food. With all the Asian fusion going on, I've started judging my tacos/burritos differently. Gonna be much more harsh on a bad chorizo con papas taco than I would on a bulgogi taco.
  14. My friends and I talk about an apocalypse, as you do, and how we'd survive. Already know that I'll wuss out and not be able to kill animals! Vegetarian hunter gatherer all the way even though all those animals would be free of cages and prancing around.
  15. Many thanks, Al! There is no appropriate emoticon to show you my appreciation, so here's a terrifying photo from beautiful California:

I've taken Wagamama off the list because they lived in a Japan for a short spell and one friend is half Japanese. I originally added it to the list because they had other friends recommending it.

My European burrito experience is forever marred by the burrito I had at Berlin's White Trash Fast Food. Not sure if I could have a burrito out of California or Texas ever again. Hashatag poncy burrito hipster. I would have thought kebabs would be the cheap ethnic food of Dublin.
  16. I don't subscribe to the magazines anymore; I just don't have any space with all my comics and books! However, I do have a legit account in my name if you'd like access to equipment reviews and recipes. Anyone who wants in, just lemme know and I'll email you the details. Just don't go signing up for Country Cook or some nonsense like that.
  17. Sawall and I were just texting (as the hip kids do!) today about why people get up in arms about the cruel practices of foie gras (as they should) but not with other animals (cows, chickens, pigs). I mentioned that I don't think all foie gras made in the States is as bad as they make it out to be.

Yes, there are terrible places that cage the birds and force feed them in horrible conditions, but now all farms are cruel. I found this post, The Physiology of Foie: Why Foie Gras is Not Unethical, and the accompanying video pretty interesting.

Oh, and California has now banned foie gras, pfft!

Anyway, back to to the cà phê Chồn / civet coffee. Have you tried it yet? I'd love to have a cup of it proper, but not sure how I'd get legit beans here in California.
