  1. Glad you're reviving this old cooking board. We could swap recipes!!! I have a killer chocolate chip cookie recipe I got from Cook's Illustrated.
  2. Ok, I couldn't think of a third word that rhymed but you get the idea.

My good friends are visiting Dublin in March 2014. This is their first time and I was wondering if you guys had any local protips I could pass along to them. It would be much appreciated!

They are into: art, fashion, comic books, thrift stores, drinking (beer, whiskeys, whiskies), pubs that locals go to, literature/poetry, Magic the Gathering, Japanese stuff, history, doom/drone metal, bujinkan, and The Smiths/Morrissey. I'm sure I'm missing something else.

Please feel free to tell me I'm completely wrong, but I've already recommended the following to them:
    • Grafton Street
    • Tea Garden
    • The Bull and Castle
    • The Porterhouse
    • National Museum of Ireland
    • National Library of Ireland
    • Phoenix Park
    • The Little Museum of Dublin
    • St Stephen's Green
    • St Patrick's Cathedral
    • Winding Stair
    • Trinity Long Room
    • James Joyce Centre
    • Whelan's
    • Zaytoon
    • Wagamama
    • Queen of Tarts
    • Book Of Kells
    • IMMA (Irish Museum of Modern Art)
    • Guinness Storehouse
    • Dublin Writers' Museum
    • Christ Church Cathedral
    • Chester Beatty Library
  3. I love baking for the same reason; I just follow the instructions and then I have something sweet to eat! Have not mastered cooking at all because I'm not so hot with the touchy-feely (perfect way to sum it up, btw).

I've gone full hippie though and have made my own kombucha, sauerkraut, and jams. Next up is attempting some sort of nut milk...
  4. Yes, you nailed it on the head! With only 3 episodes, it felt very jerky and forced. Sherlock, Doctor Who... everything is going to shit!

I wanted to start Orange is the New Black but I no longer have a Netflix account. Thank goodness Disney uploaded Gargoyles, in its entirety, onto YouTube! I have no idea if it will stand up to the test of time, but I'll get to relive my formative junior high years. Gargoyles was probably the beginning to my lite goth phase and when I started reading lots of fantasy...

I also have a bunch of older British stuff on my wishlist but am having a difficulty procuring it! Got a TV desert over here and jonesing for anything new (British or American).
  5. QUOTE (Al. @ Jan 25 2014, 01:01 AM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
That's the only reason to ever write anything on the Internet.

Where is the like/favorite button on this damn thing?

I'm going to the doctor whenever the American health care system sorts itself out (hah!), but I definitely get a little nutty when I haven't eaten every 3-4 hours. If I let it go longer than 4 hours, there's lots of yelling (me) and tears (everyone).
  6. I made a goal on Goodreads to read at least 50 books this year. (Yes, this is yet another unneeded social website, but I have a touch of the OCD and like to track everything!) I ended up surpassing it, probably thanks to all the graphic novels I read this year. Here are some quick recommendations for my favorites.

(Really should have written a review after reading each of these. I can't remember anything, sorry!)

The Sandman: Overture by Neil Gaiman

“People have often asked me what happened to Morpheus to make it possible for him to be captured in THE SANDMAN #1,” Gaiman said. “And now they get to find out. And finding out, they get to learn secrets of the Endless that I’ve kept to myself for 25 years. Family secrets." - Gaiman

As someone who sometimes drew the Eye of Horus on her face à la Death (I was in high school; I get a pass!), I'm pretty excited about the prequel series. Also, the art is better than it was in the 90s.

    Chew by John Layman

The bird flu pandemic has killed millions of Americans, leading to a nationwide ban on chicken. There's a disgusting chicken-in-a-can substitute, fried chicken speakeasies, and food clairvoyance. Tony Chu is the main character, and he is a cibopath working for the FDA. The FDA has him solving murders, usually by munching on the deceased because being a cibopath means he can see the impressions/memories of whatever living thing he eats. Absurd and sarcastic cop drama with lots of cannibalism = a fluffy, entertaining read! Also, yay, that the main character is Asian American who doesn't know some sort of martial art.

    Saga by Brian K. Vaughan

Giving you a synopsis of this series will do nothing to win you over because it's going to sound really cliche. Two star-crossed lovers are on opposite sides in an intergalactic war between their species...

All my brain can manage is NOW. READ THIS. MUST. YES! NOW NOW NOW. *gurgles*

11 out of 10 stars! Everything — art, dialogue, writing— is fantastic. Saga has everything you could ask for: a cat familiar, robot sex, magic in space, and female characters who are badass and scary (in that I-can-murder-you-NBD kind of way). This is my top pick for 2013.

Lazy Bonus: No. 5 by Taiyo Matsumoto

I think only the first two volumes have been published in English, though volumes 2 - 4 are available for download on the iPad. The entire series has been published in French and Japanese for those who can read either!

The story is about a surreal, psychedelic future where No. 5, the main character, is trying to leave his position at a global security force. I read the first 2 volumes and am now fuzzy on the details now, but I love Matsumoto's art style as well the pacing of the story. Definitely something I'll need to re-read in the near future.
  7. "KUNG FURY is an over-the-top action comedy written and directed by David Sandberg. The movie features: arcade-robots, dinosaurs, nazis, vikings, norse gods, mutants and a super kung fu-cop called Kung Fury, all wrapped up in an 80s style action packed adventure.

During an unfortunate series of events a friend of Kung Fury is assasinated by the most dangerous kung fu master criminal of all time; Adolf Hitler, a.k.a Kung Führer. Kung Fury decides to travel back in time, to Nazi Germany, in order to kill Hitler and end the Nazi empire once and for all. Kung Fury is a visually spectacular action comedy that has it's foundation in 80s cop movies."

  8. Thanks Anton! Thanks Al!

With the Steam sale, these games are all under $5 so I'll probably end up grabbing all of them. Don't Starve sounds interesting! I recall seeing a plush Chester online and was intrigued by the game. I do get frustrated by hard games (I'm extremely impatient) but I'm willing to give it a try.
  9. I've been itching to a play a game recently and have re-started Kingdom of Loathing but it's not enough (only 200 turns a day!). Thanks to this massive Steam sale, I'm eyeballing Limbo and Proteus. Has anyone had experience with either?

Maybe I should get around to finishing Braid and Sword & Sworcery...
